My husband died in 2003. We had a decent life - both of us earning around 40K per year. Now, I live on half of that - and all of the basics (food, heating, utilites, gas) have gone up since then. It is very hard. But I feel lucky to have a stable job with health insurance benefits.
How much it takes to be middle class depends on where you live. I have friends who live in Omaha and in Florida who have 5000 sq foot homes with pools, property, etc. which would cost $10 million where I live, but cost them less than $200,000. If I visit them, I go to the grocery store and come out with 4 times as much food as I can at my supermarket in NJ which is in the NYC metro area. They earn less than 1/3rd what I do, but live much better with shorter work hours, bigger more beautiful homes, etc. which allow them to send their kids to better private schools, save $, etc. If I could find work in their area in my industry, I'd move. Calling the dollars the same between their area of the country and mine is bogus.
